Musicians Unlimited Big Band

About Me

My interest in music began when I was 10 years old and I joined a local brass band. I studied music at school and progressed to study towards an ARCM Diploma at Cleveland College.

I hold the honour of being Chris Rea’s first bass player in 1975 and got the band, The Beautiful Losers, our first gig and residency.

I also played for many years in a professional folk group, The Teesside Fettlers, and appeared on national TV on two occasions, along with quite a few live and recorded sessions for BBC Radio Two’s Focus on Folk and local radio.

I am a  reader and ad-libber on trumpet and bass guitar and can play most styles of music on each instrument.

My current interests include ‘big band’ work, playing trumpet and bass, and Irish Ceilidh Band work, bass and tuba. I also compose, and got through to the semi-finals of the UK National Song Writing Competition in 2007 and 2008.

I'm both shocked and saddened to hear about my friend Dave.

We were both young trumpet players with Middlesbrough Big Band in the late 1970's but I didn't meet Dave again until I joined MU earlier this year.

My thoughts and prayers are very much with Dave's family and those people who loved, worked with and respected this great lad and musician.
